West View Restaurant, Bowness

Always keen to try new restaurants which open in the area we ventured out last week to sample the menu of newly opened West View in Bowness. A ten minute walk from Ivythwaite Lodge meant we could leave the car and have pre-dinner cocktails at our favourite cocktail bar, The Country Hut, as well as a post-dinner drink in The Westmorland, across the road from the restaurant.

Although the restaurant has yet to receive its alcohol licence, they are very happy for you to bring in your own wine, though after our cocktails we stuck to the soft drink menu! It’s worth checking when you make your reservation whether you still need to do this.

The West View states that it serves modernised oriental cuisine and there was certainly a wide range to choose from, including a large sushi menu. My tempura prawn starter was superb and disappeared far too quickly. Andrew had the Miso soup to start and enjoyed its sharp, fresh taste. He had Japanese Katsudon curry to follow and declared it to be very tasty. My Yakiudor chicken was delicious and the very generous portion meant that I couldn’t finish all of it. We didn’t have dessert as we’re not really pudding people so can’t comment on the selection or choice.

We would definitely recommend the West View as a restaurant to try during your stay with us. The service was good, attentive without being too intrusive, and the décor is smart with beautiful oriental crockery. The toilet was amazing, incorporating a number of interesting features that are apparently typical of Japanese public toilets!
